Black Thought

12 Ridiculous Things I Thought Without Realizing It...

1. While I was pregnant, one of the things I would do is make sure if I was going to the store by myself, that I had my wedding ring showing intently to counteract anyone's prejudgment that I'm just another young Black girl out here having sex, got knocked up and the father's not in the picture.

2. Where I live, when I have a day off from work and I go to the store, I wonder if people will assume that I don't have a job.

3. One time a none-Black person mentioned that they didn't have a television growing up. I asked why and she said they were poor. My initial thought was, you still are privileged. You don't know the struggle.

4. I remember when I first saw the ethnic hair section in Walmart. I mean, we want representation, but why does it have to be labeled the HERE IS YOUR REPRESENTATION section. Why can't it all be together instead of separated from the "normal hair" section.

5. Girl you slept with one Black guy and all of a sudden you're down? Honey you don't know the struggle.

6. A Black woman can have a Bachelor's in math and a Master's in teaching, but some parents want their child in the class with the younger woman (who only has a Bachelor's in childhood education and no master's) instead, just because she's white .

6. I was once told that I had a unique opportunity to relate better to a kid who'd been to the alternative school numerous times and had a terrible home life,  because I'm black like him.  No hunny, I have no idea how to relate to that. Believe it or not, there's more than one "kind" of Black.

7. When you go to a new job and so many people just happen to know you by your first and last name already. I had to wonder if they were thinking,  "Oh that's easy to remember; it's the Black one".

8. It's easy for anybody to go CCM. We know and sing "our" music and can go to another setting and adapt well cuz we know "your" music too. But it's seldom the other way around.

9. Not to take anything from custodians or administrative assistants at all, but sometimes when I go to work, I wonder if they believe I'm a teacher or the aforementioned.

10. Police.

11. Code switching is a real thing and I innately use it daily.

12. Sometimes I hate asking for help in certain settings because now I've become the incompetent Black person everyone already perceived me to be...

Maybe you read this and you understand. Maybe you read it and you're confused and this makes you sad. Maybe it made you laughed. I just wish things would change.
